A couple comments:

i) As alluded to in an email I sent a day or two ago, I appreciate the renewed emphasis and activity on tech stuff here on the f-list. Another thing I'm seeing is that we've gone through like a generation of time since the old days, as I see Rick and Mark posting (paricularly Mark's comment about getting on the track with his 11 year old), there are many of us here that used to work on the cars and such so much, got sidelined with real-life and kids, and now are perhaps getting a bit back into it as the kids grow older (and maybe they even get involved as well).

ii) I'm glad to see you're getting your 19 year old tires off your 308, Mark! :-O

iii) For tires, I use only Costco, but I use tirerack ratings/reviews as well. Just like I use Amazon for buying nearly everything -- I may not buy through Amazon (although I often do), but I'll always read reviews.

'85 308....I dropped the rear trunk cover with the non-working zipper off at the shoe repair shop where they're replacing the zipper slider again. I don't know how much these covers are, but I've replaced that slider 4 times now at about $7 a job, I wonder what inflation has the price tag for my pickup today at....?

Right on Rick, I use the same criteria for my 308.  I just don’t use it very often, last time I purchased tires was when I purchased the 308 in 1995 – Yokohama AVS.  Still on the car, and work for my once every 3mo drive through the mountains, inevitably behind a slow camper….   but they are really slick now and they are history after I get the brakes redone next week.  Then, back to the track after 20yrs, with my 11yo son and fresh rubber J

Hi Friends,

Thought I'd throw my two cents in.

I have just a few criteria for selecting tires. Mind you, my '79 308GTB has non-ABS 328 wheels. Here's what I consider when buying for any car.

First of all, I only buy tires from TireRack and use their survey ratings for my decisions.

- Summer / performance tires. Doesn't get cold or ice/snow here so all weather capabilities aren't needed, or desired.

- Dry traction rating - sticky is good on Houston's hot roads.

- Wet traction rating - sticky is good on Houston's wet roads - although this is unimportant for my F-cars since they rarely see rain, if at all.

- Noise rating - I really HATE tire noise. That whine caused by hard, high mileage, all weather tires assaults my ears. Besides, my fun-car's tires grow hard from age long before I wear through the tread. Quiet is a very high decision criteria in my tire choice.

- Cost - Yea, I'm cheap. Blame my Scottish roots. That said; I don't buy Hancock or Khumo, only because I've had bad luck with a set of Khumos. Others swear by them. I also don't pay for premium brands like Michelin or Perelli, when less hyped brands (Bridgestone, Continental, Yokohama, etc.) receive similar or better performance ratings. And TireRack's 'best seller' and 'on sale' promotions help in my decisions. Living in south Texas, shipping is quite reasonable because tires are warehoused over in Louisiana. My local independent shop installs them.

So there are my tire thoughts. I know they contrast with many others' ideas because I have no particular allegiance to Ferrari or all-things-Italian. I just like nice dry grip and quiet performance.

Grumpy-old-Rick
