The throttle mechanism on the 328 motor in my machine became so stiff that the car was almost undriveable, but the process happened slowly so at first I didn’t really notice it. Eventually, it was so bad it was like an on/off switch – no throttle/full throttle! I was spurred into action to fix it after getting stuck in stop-start traffic for an hour or two coming home from a club run and having to compensate for the lack of sensitivity of the throttle by riding the clutch to avoid lurching into the back of the cars in front!  Not a good look!

The source of the stiffness was the mechanism on the side of the throttle body that just needed a bit of lubrication. It’s amazing, but this simple fix transformed the driving experience!

Cheers,

Grahame

Adam – do share, do share.

I recall when we first had got our ’78 308 GFS I tried double clutching going into our neighborhood off of the semi busy main street.  (heh heh)  Well - - - the throttle was sooo stiff I ended up really trouncing it - - - AND the brakes at the same time and locking up the light right front tire.  Here comes Mr. Cool in his hot $--t Ferrari, rev rev Schreeeeech – cloud of smoke from why worn out Michelin XWX’s – red faced, recover, creep home.

Found out what the throttle problem was – the grease in the monkey motion throttle was harder than a whore’s heart.  Sort of pinkish.  Impervious to brake cleaner.  Just the soap left.  Hmmm – soaked them in alcohol and WD40 to free up the throttle axel and lo and behold - - there are two needle bearing races in there so clogged they wouldn’t turn.  Repairs done and some bicycle cable lube down the throttle cable – now we’re cookin’ but I never tried the double clutch and braking at the same time – pedals just don’t fit my foot pattern scenario.  I need more practice.

Check with performance friction, usually called just PFC, to see if they have a pad to suit the size and compound for track days.

Fluid won't be the issue so long it's fresh and there's a proper flush and bleed.  It's the thickness of the pad and maybe installing a titanium reflector plate between the pad and the caliper pistons.

If you're "late braking" it's also a matter of technique (especially at Laguna Seca) to develop the technique of straight line braking at the markets, then trail-braking to the apex.  If that's unfamiliar, I'm happy to point to some more information.

Hi Guys,

Now that the 308 will have new brakes and new rubber, I plan on taking it out to Pikes Peak International Raceway down in Colorado Springs for some hot laps with my son.  Last time I did that it was at Laguna Seca, and I really felt my brakes fading after about 8 laps.

Thus…. Do you guys have any suggestions for brake fluid and pads that I should use to minimize this?

Happy Labor Day!
