Re: Found 308 no-start problem (unbelievably simple)

In my experience, it doesn't really mean anything. When I was checking
plugs, how they looked when I pulled them out varied a huge amount depending
on what the last thing was that I was doing. The mixtures vary so much with
engine speed and throttle position that it's impossible to read anything by
looking at the plugs....that is unless you have extremely wrong mixtures.

Here is an average plug looks like after a few thousand miles.

And, PS:  You are not doing your engine any favors
by running overly rich.  You will leave carbon deposits
in the cylinders and - more importantly - in the valve seats,
which will result in valves not seating properly and thus
burnt valves.  Run LEAN!!!!  You only need rich mixtures
under heavy throttle/load.  This you can do via the mains
and air correctors.  The idles should be as lean as possible
without giving a misfire.  And, BTW, my 20ish mpg is in
non-spirited freeway driving.  Road too crowded around
here to get  carried away.  So I'm talking 70-80mph cruise.
But back road hard core driving I'm still not dipping below
14-15mpg.  And this is seeing 120-130mph straights, but
mostly crooked road, lots of full throttle.  Dyno with my jet
combo was ~ 245hp, but with some other "tweaks".  I'm
seeing some 20hp over stock with the help of my
mechanic and the dyno techs.

No, it's jets.  I have aftermarket exhaust and K&N.  Told you - lean as
possible on the idle jets, way rich on the mains and air correctors.  Stock
emulsion tubes are likely optimal.  This combo gives clean burn during
highway driving, but 12:1 A/F under full throttle.  Done all of the above on
a chassis dyno. Maxed for clean burn *and* max power.

Could it be because of the tubi and K&N?  more airflow must mean more fuel.
Also we have shitty gas here only 91 octane. I also do not drive
in the manner that would be considered good for gas mileage.........

12-13mpg???

Mine gets 18-20 with the somewhat richer jets I put in,
was getting over 20 with some leaner jets - but I was
getting a bit of a misfire at times.  Burns clean, plugs
never have any soot on them.

the GT4 runs rich but still is set up fine gets 12-13mpg same as my Rodeo. I
do let it idle about 5 minutes on startup, mostly highway driving

Well you can look on the bright side, it was your fuel pump, I know it did

Oh yes! I forgot to mention that adding the towing ($80), changing almost
all relays, all the fuses, all the spark plugs, contact cleaner. This whole
saga cost me $337. dollars. All I actually needed to do was put gas in it.

That is sucking a lot of juice! Hopefully with normal driving, instead of
sitting at idle for a lot of time, you get a lot better than that.
I would have thought around 10l/100km on a highway cruise.

1981 308 GTSi: I'll start with the punch line right away. FAULTY GAS GAUGE.

I changed the 'Level gauge control' inside the tank in july 2013. I was
tired of always checking my mileage to calculate how much gas I had after 10
years. So, I thought I was good for a few years. I had done 255 miles since
my last fill up. But my gauge said I had 1/4 left. No worry right?
Remember my emails ? It starts and it dies after 10 or 15 or 20 seconds. I
changed all the fuses, all the relays except 3. I found the ground wire of
the gas pump and filed the frame real good where it was screwed in, also
filed the female part holding the wire. Always same thing, it started and
died right away again this morning.

I had an idea. After 255 miles maybe, just maybe it's empty ?
It ran at idle quite a lot for some reason. For example, my mechanic did a
fuel mixture to get rid of the dark smoke coming out of the exhaust. It
idled for about 30 minutes just for that. So, I bought a gas can and put 20
liters in it. As soon as I started to fill the gas tank and I could clearly
hear the gas falling into an empty bottom. Funny sound. I knew that was the
problem. It started on the second crank, drove to the nearest gas station
and added 47.6 liters. That's 67.6 liters for a 70 liter tank. That thing
was empty. That's 15.75 liters per 100 km. That's 14.4 miles per gallon,
right ? It was much much better a few years ago.

AAAAHHHHHH! The suffering Ferrari owner must go through to live their dream!

Thanks for all the help!
