Ok look at a car that runs 134 the condenser is HUGE the size of the radiator it self

The reason is R134 needs massive air flow to get cooling where R-12 needs very little air flow to get the temps down

Massive condensers  need massive fans as well

Look at any late model car!

My 512 TR has a very small condenser and puts out 40 degree air from the vents when the temp is 90 out side

R12 is way more efficient that R134 but it has a ozone issue

You can buy R12 on ebay that new like I did

I have enough to last me 15 years

I have converted one 512 TR to R-134 and the owner wanted me to do it

He regrets it to this day

Cars have to be designed from the beginning for R-134 in order to achieve the  same results as a R-12 unit

That’s it guys

Been there done that

In defeat you need it!

I dunno.....he's a pretty sharp M.E. who knows this stuff better than most of us here, and would certainly know what R134a is and isn't....come on, lol.

Man, the dissent on the List lately.......599 GTOs suck, Ford GTs suck.......only a matter of time before we hear some bashing of the Carrera GT. :)

And this article linked basically purports R134A to be as good or better than R12 (I more or less skimmed it), and we all know that ain't the case. Environmental considerations are why R12 is extinct as well as Halon 1301 for fire suppression (in buildings).

Anyways, please enlighten me with more exciting F1 news while I tend to some boring NFL....

IMO your car guy does not know what he's talking about.  There is no such thing as "commercial" refrigerant so he's probably referring to R134a.  Here's a good read on converting from R12 to R134a - http://www.griffiths.com/achelp/achelp3.html

Erik's analogy of the 512BB air conditioning reminded me of something...

A car guy told me recently he uses commercial A/C refrigerant in his truck and the cold air it produces is insane. I asked him which one he uses and hasn't gotten back to me.

Is this something anyone would consider on the older cars? It's better than using R12.

Nobody should have to suffer from subpar A/C in a 30 year old car, and that statement alone should stand up in the court of law.
