Lucky for us Aussies, the propane based gas is legal and works as well as R12. 134a runs at a much higher pressure than the system was designed for and is NOT as cold.

Do Tell Clyde – do tell.  “Drop in” refrigerants to replace R12 run the array from illegal stuff with propane in it to legal stuff like 134a.  In an R12 system, R134a doesn’t work so well.  Molecular size withstanding.  The systems have a real different configuration.  From physical location of components to the wide variation of system lubricants.  Besides – getting ‘good’ R12 is harder and harder to find.  Most comes from older wrecked cars or (shudder) Mexico.  It is better than nothing but you’ll not expect vent temps in the 40’s from an R12 system with R134a in it.  Alas.  Or then, maybe I’m wrong –
