Bingo! After the discussion this week, I called my Mother-in-law's old boss. He's owned an automotive A/C place for 35 years. He concurs with you. But he said that doesn't mean bozos haven't tried the other stuff. He added that crazy ideas presented on Internet car forums have led some not so intelligent folks to do some pretty stupid stuff in recent years!! Seems these Walmart recharge kits you see on TV are resulting in a lot of business for him too. Apparently one of the commercial refrigerants reacts with chemistry in an automotive type receiver/dryer to generate a foam that slowly coats the internals and eventually locks the compressor up.
