Very good –rick.  Another keeper.

 

Picture this – it’s the early 1970’s and Porsche has replaced the 912, a 911 looking car but with a small 1600 4 cyl boxer dual carbed engine, with the 914 – a mid-engined injected 4 cyl. Car.  Plastic fuel lines run from the upfront gas tank and they, yes two lines – one to the injectors and one for unused fuel back to the tank, are run UNDER the battery.  Battery acid drips on fuel lines, pin holes are created, and the high pressure FI pump sprays engine compartment with fuel.  Fuel does what fuel does best – IT BURNS.  HOT.

 

Early 70’s fire departments are NOT familiar with the 914 let alone a burning 914.  Answering the burning car call they arrive and pop the rear trunk lid - ????  NO ENGINE??  Pop the front hood – NO ENGINE??  WTF?  By this time the car is fully engulfed.

 

Tough buns Ace.  Ayep – Porsche put out memo to have their “fix” put in place.  A battery cover.  Whhhh?  Ayep again – rain water would come in thru the air screen behind the window (imagine a 10 inch by width of car screen directly behind a TR, 512, or 308 rear window) and the battery would over flow – acid drips on plastic fuel line – Pooooof.

 

By the way – that is a life time dealer fix.  If your 914 HASN”T had the fix – it can get one.
