Famed automotive engineeting author, Colin Campbell, in the '60s wrote in 'The Sports Car Engine', "Only the horse knows where it hurts but its the rider who insists upon talking to the vet." He was addressing how drivers tell their mechanics what is wrong with their car, rather than letting the mechanic diagnose based upon observations. I paraphrase his council this way: Diagnose BEFORE surgery. I just wish I always followed his advice.

Veterinarians are similar to automotive technicians – they’re faced with the fact their patients can’t tell them where it hurts.  And then a smart aleck response pops about ‘well what about the OBD II cars – you just plug them in and a computer tells you what’s wrong.”  Double smart aleck response is “yer running a fever – plug in a thermometer – my my it’s 105 - - - but whyyyy?”

My hat is off to the very few automotive technicians, who are curious, intelligent, and rare.  Same same for a good Vet.  Past proud owner of a 13.5 year old Old English Mastiff.  Good vet.

Heh heh
