Miss Linda? If I were Stroker Ace I’d say she was Miss Fireplug – but then Miss Golden Shifter (I think that what it was) - - - that ain't bad, not bad at all.Les – you’ve done the correct thing in the company of greatness - - - you had YOUR picture taken with THEM.Something I didn’t get around to until, well, my press chapter had finished and the book was closed. Alas. Ah ah ahOnwardDOUGFrom: Les Thompson [mailto:les21 [at] ix.netcom.com]

Subject: RE: [Ferrari] Crisis ? What crisis ?Doug,Yes, Pook is still upright. Last year he was trying to get the Long Beach City council to not renew the LPGA's contract and to go with F1 again. Evidently, he still holds the rights for F1 at Long Beach and is trying to put together a deal with Ecclestone to bring F1 back to Long Beach. The council didn't go for it and extended the current contract by two years. We all know that Ecclestone will want them to dump a ton of money into the course and facilities with no guarantee of a return. So we'll see how things work out. Here's a lady I know you'll recognize.Cheers,Les-----Original Message----- From: Doug & Terri Sent: Mar 29, 2015 3:53 PM To: 'Les Thompson' Cc: 'The FerrariList' Subject: RE: [Ferrari] Crisis ? What crisis ?Yeah yeah yeah – that’s it – thanks for the correction Les. Love the ‘warmers’ – you lucky dog.Picture this – it’s 1974 (?) in San Francisco and there’s this fewllow Chris Pook who’s throwing an investor party. Me? I was no investor but with years of press free loading training from Ferrari Willie (AKA Ferrari Bubba) I knew how to crash a press party. So Chris says if you have $5,000 tp throw away – or maybe it’ll work – invest in the most current street race. The LBGP. I knew about it from hanging about Gurney’s shop, AAR in the late 60’s. Had no idea it was going to be LB. ?? That place was a slum. Sooo – it’s really going to happen? Hmmmm.I knew the fellow who was involved in the first serious crash – Dick Workman. He was driving his F5000 in the 1975 ‘warm up’ race before the ’76 F1 GP. I had bought my 1951 356 Porsche from him (10529) and Dick was quite a guy. Very excitable. His crash? At the end of pit row. A little too hot down pit row on Fri or Sat – not the race – and crashed sideways at the course entrance trying to negotiate the bear left out of the pits and make a sharp right down Linden (Thanks Les).In 1979 I moved back to SoCal so attended the ‘79 – to last f1 race but as hoi poll. Tho Thursdays was so confusing it was easy to slip around. Can’t do that anymore. Thanks 9/11.Neat thing - the weekend prior to the race many of the teams would go out to Willow Springs raceway – about 2 hours north of the L.A. impact zone. Out by Edwards AFB – home of the test pilots and NACA and NASA. There, at Willow, a person could get so close to the cars you could just about get inside the race cars. No hassle. The following week end? The average person couldn’t get within 50 feet of same cars at Long Beach. I mean – how many people could tell that Prost would cut the toe out of his accelerator shoe? I think he was driving a turbo Renault then. My recollection was “what a pig –“ Who woulda guessed in a few years what the F1 world would be doing.Good memories – Les – you’ve seen it all. Chris Pook still up right?OnwardDOUGFrom: Les Thompson [mailto:les21 [at] ix.netcom.com] Sent: Sunday, March 29, 2015 1:37 PM To: Doug & Terri Cc: 'The FerrariList' Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Crisis ? What crisis ?Little correction on the streets, it was up Pine, right on Ocean, right on Linden. The right onto Linden was the infamous 'Linden Leap', had a manhole cover right on the apex. The shifter karts in the support race got serious air over that manhole cover. Course now turns right from Pine onto Seaside, then right onto Linden at 9, through 10 to the hairpin at the start of Shoreline. Not near as exciting as the old course.Miss the F1 cars, both CART and IRL are like watching a Barber Saab race, the support races are a lot more exciting these days. This year for ever 'MORE' excitement, they're bringing in Formula E, can barely my anticipation. Won't be a good time to visit the Expo, because everyone from the stand will have the same idea.Started with Race Management in 1981, this year marks my 35th Long Beach race. At 3 days per year, that's 105 days of my life spent there. Hey, get to be around the race cars, nice shirt each year, every 5 years a jacket, not to mention mystery meat sandwiches for lunch each day. The great Saturday night beer fest is long gone, replaced by a burger fest. Also long gone is sticking your arm and camera over the wall to get those pics of the cars coming up track. There are still some perks, here's a picture of me hard at work helping some of the team girls keep warm.Cheers, Les T.-----Original Message----- From: Doug & Terri Sent: Mar 29, 2015 12:58 PM To: Les Thompson Cc: 'The FerrariList' Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Crisis ? What crisis ?Thanks LarryIf you get past the first clip – the second clip is then entire 1982 LBGP F1 race. Good shots of the up and down hill sections of the track. On Thursday, watching the cars going uphill to Pacific Ave the cars & move to the left close to the cement barriers thinks I – goody, I’ll go over there and get some good frontal cockpit shot.Didn’t happen.I would have stood a better chance trying to catch a bullet leaving an M-1 Garand rifle standing beside it. So – I guess THAT’s what it’s like to stand 2 away from a car doing well over 100 mph. Hear it coming - - - POW – - - - thass all. There were better places to stand as the cars came down the hill or crested onto Pacific.Of course on race day – the best shots were NOT on the track – they were made shooting the top of the infield motor homes with guests sitting on the roofs drinking and watching the race. Crowds of evil college boys would hold up signs and chant - - “Show us your tit$” – they did - yausa – those were the days.Heh heh DOUGFrom: Ferrari [mailto:ferrari-bounces+dnt=dock.net [at] ferrarilist.com] On Behalf Of LarryT Sent: Sunday, March 29, 2015 9:27 AM To: DOUG Cc: The FerrariList Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Crisis ? This clip shows two important aspects of the track before it was changed:1 – The Queens Hair Pin (named because the Queen Mary was just - - over - - - - there; and,2 – the steep up the hill and drop off at Pacific Ave – a quick right/left/right affair. The drop off and turns broke axels on the best of cars. Track was changed to do away with the Queens Hair Pin as it was too exciting at the start and the brutal drive up to Pacific Ave and pits was done away with to allow more customers to see pits on Bay Shore Drive and smooth out the track. Ach – those were the times.
