Thanks Larry

If you get past the first clip – the second clip is then entire 1982 LBGP F1 race.  Good shots of the up and down hill sections of the track.

On Thursday, watching the cars going uphill to Pacific Ave the cars & move to the left close to the cement barriers thinks I – goody, I’ll go over there and get some good frontal cockpit shot.

Didn’t happen.

I would have stood a better chance trying to catch a bullet leaving an M-1 Garand rifle standing beside it.  So – I guess THAT’s what it’s like to stand 2 away from a car doing well over 100 mph.  Hear it coming - - - POW – - - - thass all.

There were better places to stand as the cars came down the hill or crested onto Pacific.

Of course on race day – the best shots were NOT on the track – they were made shooting the top of the infield motor homes with guests sitting on the roofs drinking and watching the race.  Crowds of evil college boys would hold up signs and chant -  - “Show us your tit$” – they did - yausa – those were the days.

Heh heh

Long Beach!!  Hoo Hahhh.  This clip shows two important aspects of the track before it was changed:

1 – The Queens Hair Pin (named because the Queen Mary was just - - over - - - - there; and,

2 – the steep up the hill and drop off at Pacific Ave – a quick right/left/right affair.  The drop off and turns broke axels on the best of cars.  Track was changed to do away with the Queens Hair Pin as it was too exciting at the start and the brutal drive up to Pacific Ave and pits was done away with to allow more customers to see pits on Bay Shore Drive and smooth out the track.

Ach – those were the times.

The back markers were exciting to watch even back in the days...
