"Lap of the Gods" is a must have for any serious racing fan! When all the had between their ribs and a side impact was a beer can's worth of sheet metal.
Reminds me, I need to copy those to my media server so I can watch them in the garage while I'm working. And "the flying Scotsman".... "Speed Merchants"... And...
I have the DVD called "Lap of the Gods" with that clip...breathtaking to say the least.

The back markers were exciting to watch even back in the days...
The F1 action has been limited to the midfield battles for years now. I still attend to hear the cars and watch the support races. The vintage F1 cars put on a 10x better show before the Big Event.
Real racing today?
V8 Supercar is excellent as is that Blancpain series that I sometimes see with John Watson commentating. If you get a chance, search Youtube for a few minutes of a NASCAR Sonoma road course race for some real action.

I think I'm also in that camp. I still appreciate the driving, and tallent required to wring the most out of those high-strung machines, but the races haven't been too exciting since we saw 6 or 8 different winners a couple of years back. In fact that might have been the most exciting season (or, first half of a season) since I started watching in the mid-80's. Even back then, and through the 90's and 2K's, it was really one or two teams and/or drivers dominating. I used to watch strictly to root for Ferrari (and do still like to see them "prosper"), but now I'm more interested in good competition (or would be, if we had it....).
Tangentially, both of my Tag Heuer F1 watches have dead batteries. Coincidence??? You decide.... ;-)
