What does this have to do with 550s?

The fuel tank and pumps are at the rear of the car.

Subject: [Ferrari] Hot F550 Fuel Pump

Picture this – early 1970’s and the Porsche / Volkswagen 914 hits the market.  Now this model, like the Volkswagen Bug, uses fresh air from the engine bay channeled over the exhaust system to supply heat to the cabin.  It therefore is “on” all the time.

But hark – there is a valve or gate if you wish, which dumps unwanted heated air back out onto the street, incrementally, at the pelota’s behest.  Porsche has done this beginning with their KDF Wagen (Bug) back in the thirty’s.

Contrary to popular belief, this system was NOT used in 1898 in the first hybrid vehicle, the “Löhner-Porsche Mixte Hybrid.“

Anyway – in VW’s terrific 914 engineering department, they ran into a problem – where oh where to place the high pressure FI fuel pump?  Oh look, says Heinrich, there is room just ahead of the engine on the frame.  Too bad Heinrich didn’t discuss this with Rolf who designed where the heater air dumps.  Can you guess?  Well, for those of you who said ‘right on the fuel pump’ either had an early 914 or just plain don’t trust new car engineers.  In either case – you are correct.  Want to discuss fuel starvation and vapor lock because of hot hot hot FI pump?  This is the place to do it.

The problem was realized and repaired after their customer R & D department – which, in a nutshell, happens to be all those who bought the bomb and complained.

The 914 lasted until the 1976 model which, coincidentally, was NEVER made in 1976.  Turns out VW’s president left this mortal coil and his replacement came along and declared “Es Reicht!” – That’s enough.  And the contract expired 12/31/75.  Porsche, now stuck with a bunch of 4 cylinder engines, said “was Machen wir jetzt? Wadda we do now?  And the short answer was = use a 911 body, drop the 4 cylinder engine in it, change the FI, and call it the “912E.”  E for Einspritzung – Injection.

So the point here is – why not move the F550 FI pump?
