I would disconnect the wires from the sensor at the engine and put a voltmeter across the two sensor prongs and read the resistance as the engine warms up. I don't know off the top of my head what the values would be, but as the engine warms up, you should see a change in resistance values. If it doesn't, then the sensor is bad, if it does change, then the gauge is bad....
....But before you throw out the gauge, confirm the resistance values at the harness connection behind the dash. If you don't see the values change there, then there could be a problem somewhere down the wiring. I need to determine if it is the pickup or the gauge
Thus-
1) If I pull and short the temp thermistor(I assume it is a thermistor??) leads what should the gauge do? Full max or full min? 2) If I put a resistance(how much??) across the temp gauge leads, what should the gauge do?
Other quick tips/tricks to determine which is bad??
Thank goodness the wiring doesn’t go through the fuse block…..
Mark Ps – another shout out to Paul Bennett and his 308 wiring diagram jpg – awesomely usefull !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
