It wasn't about facing death... Which I thought for years. But reading a piece in (iirc) Smithsonian mag, Hemingway was questioned on his quote by a literary student from Cambridge. When living in Paris he came across Greek work about the Olympics and questioned Greek friends as to the use of "games" in regards to Olympic contests. The term "sport" as we use it today comes from the French. But in the words of Aristotle, sport (Greek- athleema?) as originally defined does not contain the absolutes of a game. In other words, Bulls and mountains don't understand rules. I'm not sure how he tied Motorsports into the triad. But being a Motorsports fan I just accept it and move on. Perhaps it's because, as we all know, machines have a mind of their own??

IIRC, Hemingway did NONE of those three. Although, based on the huge number of drinking spots around the world he is reputed to have frequented (possibly more places than where Washington slept!), I would say that he was an expert and champion drinker. That might be added to the list of sports because it can kill you just as dead as the others, albeit more slowly.
When you are lying on your deathbed, what will you remember more, the things you owned or the things you did?
This is where millennials may be on to something in that they tend to be less interested in owning big houses or expensive cars and more interested in experiential spending. Big implications for the market economy of the future.
