 So, if that part is malfunctioning (my mechanic told me it is not working anymore), can this be the cause of my backfires ?  It's been going on for 2-3 years and I changed A LOT of parts to solve the problem- I even wrote about it 1-2 years ago to the list. I get very small backfires when I'm driving at a regular rpm (3000 to 4000) in second and third gear when stuck in traffic. As long as I keep the rev going up, it's no problem. But if I'm stuck and keep the rev at a steady number (anywhere between 3000 and 4000) in 2nd or 3rd, rarely happens in 4th, never ever in 5th.  Then the very small backfires happen.

 

It's a very very expensive part. But if that's what it takes, then......................
