Every time I read about the "necessary evil' (good
explanation Rick), it reminds me about my favorite driver, Niki Lauda. He is
among the best drivers ever group. Still, he paid his first drive in the early
70s. I think it was BRM. Being said, at least he proved to be an excellent
driver very quickly. At least, good enough for Enzo Ferrari to hire him.
With Maldonado, I feel it's too late. He will always have to pay to drive. He
reminds me of Andrea DeCesaris. He brought Marlboro money everywhere he went.
Many teams used that money to survive eventhough he crashed all the time. James
Hunt (as a BBC commentator) used to call him "DeCrashsaris".

cost
It's even more amazing when you consider some of them are "negative
salaries". Maldonado and Perez, for two, are paid out of money
they bring with them. So essentially they are paying for their drives
rather than being paid to drive. I looked for the list a friend "in the
game" sent me that showed the "pay per seat" drivers but didn't find it...
I know it's out there for those more adept at finding things.
While I understand this practice is a "necessary evil", especially for
the lower budget teams... It's yet another issue that keeps Formula 1
from being as good as it should be. Better drivers without that backing
money do not make the field. For a solid list of drivers who should be
in F1 save the financial backing, look no further than DTM or Formula
E.
Rick
I find the spread (more like a chasm) of salaries amazing...
