Foggy glass
From: Craig Williamson (da-rollscomcast.net)

The clock 'glass' is plastic because, at the time, it was difficult to drill a small hole through glass for the stem without the glass cracking. Ferrari took the easy way out!

The plastic will scratch with cleaning and will degrade over time, giving the foggy look. Now that you have it out, replace it with glass as now it can be drilled. The other gauges are glass and that's why they don't degrade.

Well the glass is damaged (foggy) beyond repair. It's some sort of plastic. I tried a few things and it barely looks better. Anyway, the important thing
is, it still works. I hope so, if I damaged something, I'll only know next
spring.

I just don't understand why this one is bad and ALL my other gauges still
look great.

Thanks for trying to help!

Congrats Michael - but, um, is the lens poly(methyl methacrylate) or
non-crystalline amorphous solid? (ah ah ah - I looked it up - plastic or
glass).
Sounds like you're on the way.
Gopher it.

Finally got the chrome off. 25 minutes of struggle. The stem for the hands
is still in place. But I'll manage to clean the glass anyway because it's
hanging on the outside of the clock. Time for a break and a beer.
Tomorrow,
glass cleaning day.

Michael asks "I just don't understand why this one [clock crystal] is bad
and ALL my other gauges still look great.

Could it be that you are exceeding Einstein's Time Dilation theory? Could
it be Enzo had in for you? Or could it be the clock crystal is acrylic
plastic affected by UV light and the other gauge crystals are glass?

Go with the latter. Besides - to drill a hole in glass for the clock time
stem setter would be really delicate AND time con$uming for indu$try if the
crystal were glass. So your clock face is plastic.

Did you look at the post I sent you a few days ago?

I think the answer might be that the other dials are glass.

Just picked up on this conversation. You mean all this time there was a
clock behind that foggy dial? Wow - the things you find out!
Cheers,

Actually, glass drills are no problem to get... Here's a huge assortment on Amazon, but I bet you could find one at your local hardware store:

http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aglass%20drill%20bits

As for the glass, I don't remember what size it is, but watchmakers may have one (called "crystals"):

http://www.esslinger.com/watch-crystals/

My watch that I wear for work got damaged because I accidentally hit the corner and the mineral crystal busted... I bought a plastic one from Esslinger, along with the installation tool (a multi-jawed clamp which squeezes the crystal to a smaller diameter) and replaced it myself - very easy! In the case of the Ferrari clock, all that would be needed is a flat crystal the correct size and drill the stem hole.

Peter
