512BB? The one with 27 (seemingly) Weber carburetors? If so – I believe it would have had the 930 beat for sound. Fell in love with that car at the factory in ’79. The only car I ever saw in Italy with a “300” bumper sticker. Wazzat I asked our tour fellow – oh that? That’s the max speed they can go on the Autostrada. Some quick math this way and that way - - - hmmm, about 190 mph. Cool I said in 1979 speak. Then Tibor and I walked across the street to the empty Cavallino Pizzeria - - - well before it become a 5 star restaurant with 10 star prices. Air cooled may be technically obsolete, but Porsche made the most of it. If you have ever driven a 79 930 turbo you would know it blew away anything Ferrari made at the time. I love my 79 308 GTS, but I would gladly trade it for an unmolested example of a 930 and I wouldn't have to worry about coolant corrosion, changing the water pump, hoses, or any of the other stuff (belts) that degrades over ( a short) time.

Clyde,
As a 512TR owner who also has -- and loves -- an air cooled Porsche (normally aspirated 993, used as both daily driver and track events), I wonder how you would classify me. (But maybe it's not so difficult, since I purchased it, used, long ago, not for anything remotely resembling "6 figures".)
Regards, Larry
P.S. Too late for me not to breed.

Air Cooled engines - who in their right mind would do something like that? Ohhhhhhh, how about Grumman's Bearcat? Douglas' DC3, 4 5,6 or Lockheed's Connie's? And the B-24's. 25s, 29's?
Actually, Porsche technically classifies their engines as 'oil cooled.'
The ONE thing I had to get used to when we first got our 308GTS was the smell of hot water. That was after I burped the radiator. Frightening until you get used to the routine. But then there was the time . . . .
On one of the first days after it was delivered (From MN to CA) - my daughter and I went out to shoot thru (we're hot) a Taco Bell. I had burped the system and to do a good job released the water reservoir cap, above the rear headers, a bit. You see where this is going? Ayep - a few miles from home I notice steam on the back window - what th???? Sure enough, the cap is still on but I had cross threaded it. %*&*%^&^% so I get a rag, with the thot of back off a half notch and rethread it correctly and tightly. One half click to the left and all hell break loose!
Not ONLY does it boil over (no scalds) but the coolant boils down on the exhaust headers and CATCHES ON FIRE - oh CRAP. Yeah, I blew the fire out nearly hyperventilating and learned - take a fire extinguisher. This was 1996. That was ALSO the year I learned one can drive an old Ferrari if they remember two words: "cell" "Phone."
Onward.

Clyde,
As a 512TR owner who also has -- and loves -- an air cooled Porsche (normally aspirated 993, used as both daily driver and track events), I wonder how you would classify me. (But maybe it's not so difficult, since I purchased it, used, long ago, not for anything remotely resembling "6 figures".)
Regards, Larry
P.S. Too late for me not to breed.

Wow How enlightening Thanks for the throw back into 40's By the way Grumman, Lockheed and Douglas didn't make engines Pratt and Whitney, Lycoming among others did ! Next time you fly ( or maybe you travel by covered wagon ) See if you find any reciprocating engines on your airliner! Air cooled no less And yes Popeye they made water cooled reciprocating engines there was one in every P-51 made! And for the record I am an A&P mechanic among other things So I know just a little about round motors carbs and such If nostalgia is what your looking for Take the A/C out buy a black and white TV Put a George Wallace for president sign in your front yard And you there!
Most of us like things that work and that have a mean time between failure Longer than there tongue !
As for the 512 owner Who owns an air cooled car At least he knows the difference between Excellence and a VW!
Gotta go
In victory you deserve Champagne In defeat you need it!
Scars are Tattoos with better stories !
If you follow all the rules You miss all the fun!
If you have no enemies, you have no character !

Yeah, I blew the fire out nearly hyperventilating and learned ? take a fire extinguisher. This was 1996.
