Yes most century series fighters were in fact pigs and dangerous to fly.
That's why there was such a high accident rate back then.
Also here is one for the books the Voodoo was the only USAF that I knew of that
Could refuel AAR both ways probe and drouge and boom receptacle!
Was the ADC one the same way ?
Only flew a neutered one twice in RTU and never hit the tanker with it.
As you well know the Voodoo had that annoying pitch up issue at high AOA
The only guys I knew that flew the wings off that thing were the Canadians
They had no apparent fear of death with that airplaneThere is a good book out called
It's very accurate
All the best

Hi Clyde!
So you are saying that the RF-4C was faster than the Thud!  I hadn't thought of the Recce version.  My comparison/recollection was that in full Mil power. i.e.. without A/B, that the Thud, particularly on the deck would outrun the D & E using full MIL power.  I do recall (painfully) that a clean RF was at least 50 knots faster than a clean D or E and that we had to escort them in various configurations usually making us 100 knots slower.  They had to slow down for us to keep up with them (the rather dubious idea that we were protecting them) which was not a good deal at all in NVN.  So, now that I think about it with my octogenarian brain, the RF-4C was most probably the fastest!

Additionally, as a "defender of democracy" as old TAC guys refer to ADC guys, I had 1200 hrs in the F-101B.  To be candid, it was a pig of an airplane.  It was only worth a damn above 1.2 mach as you probably know.  I did get paired on a U-2 above 70k one time and I got him.  Got just above 60k and while inverted trying to get my nose down below the horizon, had to hold .5G as I would have pitched up at 1G.  Could see part of Oregon down to LA.  Those were the days!!!

Sorry Luke
Not really
I flew the RF-4C its was a different kettle of fish entirely
And the only fighter that could out run me on the deck was the F-111E or the FB-111
And that was at maple flag up north
I out ran many F-105 both D models and G models at Red Flag
Along with many an F-15 and F-16 trying to run me down at low altitude
An RF with 3 bags and a ALQ-131 pod and a 95 degrees day could do 1.1 Mach all
Day long in mil power
I just need to tap min burner to break the Mach back to mil
With a MACAIR centerline only and a pod I could do 1.3 Mach until I got tired or ran dry
In min burner
The Thud was fast but not as fast as an RF-4C
Flew again against them all
Flew the RF-101C as well good bird down low but it was a century series fighter and
Could not turn like the Thud

The Thud was a good interdiction attack Fighter, the Lightning an older generation interceptor, and the F-4 was a Jack of all trades bird.  I Liked them all and flew the F-4C, D, and E (as well as other Fighters).  The Thud was really fast in full military power( sans A/B) and would out run an F-4 on the deck.  By playing the vertical and using a little A/B, we could take them almost every time, however.  Never engaged the Lightning, but, admired it from afar.  In a no shit fight I would take the Lightning over the Thud and The F-4 over them both, particularly if I had an F-4E.  Best aircraft I ever flew was the F-86L.

Respectively you guys have no idea what you are talking about. You have no idea how integrated the systems are in the EU after 40 plus years. This is going to be all figured out in 2 years? There are several hundred thousands of pages of laws that have to be reviewed and voted on one by one to decide which stay and which don't. The electric and gas systems are integrated. The bank systems and laws. The fact that after 21 years the blonde suddenly won't be legal to work as a finance director here, drive on her drivers license, or even any of the rights she had Monday as a tax payer and resident here for 2 decades.

The UK government is incompetent at the best of times regardless of the party. They have no plan what to do, no systems in place and no idea how to manage this. In many ways the EU brought this on themselves as the UK really just wanted a common market. The EU is a mess BUT there is no plan to leave and now the EU is going to destroy the UK in every. Way possible to make the feel the pain some nobody else dares to vote to leave. You may think those parts look cheap that you want to buy because the exchange rate just crashed but they are IMPORTED into the UK or built from imported steel ( exhausts) or on imported equipment. You can't escape the exchange rate works both ways. Better take advance really quick if you see any deals you like cause they next time they have to restock those deals will be gone.
