The activities of the local clubs are pretty much determined by the club.
The club in Austin, Texas does a broad spectrum of events such as
over-the-ropes during races with the race teams and drivers, two-day drive
(a lot well over the speed limit) in the hill country around Austin, an hour
drive to a shop that restores vehicles for Pebble Beach, plus outreach
programs like our 50-years of Ferrari event at the Circuit of the Americas
where we invited the public to come see the cars, talk to the owners, watch
the Canadian GP at the track, and then we drove some very sick kids in our
cars through an autocross.  We do dinners once a month but at obscure
restaurants, such as the one where the Ferrari team eats when they are in
Austin for the USGP.  And, of course, our reception during the USGP this
year was off the charts with lots of very expensive collector cars, two
Schumacher F1 cars, great food, a mini concert by world renowned violinist
Elizabeth Pitcairn on the most famous Stradivarius - the "Red Violin".  We
don't have business meetings.  We will get together for breakfast once a
month.  We also have tech sessions put on by the three shops in Austin that
work on Ferraris and lapping session at Circuit of the Americas.  By
offering a wide variety we've been able to significantly improve
participation by club members and their spouses.

I can't say this model would work everywhere but for our membership, they
seem to enjoy it.

You guys really get a crap deal with the FOC. Here in the UK all events but
track days ( which are subsidised) are free to members including Ferrari
Racing Days at Silverstone, the concours , ect. All my area group meetings
are about friends meeting up, cars, car trips and events ect. Nobody cares
about plastic surgery, showoffs, or who has the biggest house. Must be a
cultural issue.
