Never heard of an intake runner problem on 355s. Most common issues: Valve guides
--- not all cars had it. Most have been sorted by now, but worth compression/leakdown test if undocumented. Headers --- all factory ones a problem – even later ones. Tubi or Fabspeed best fixes. Adjustable Shocks --- Tend to leak. Expensive to replace. Better rebuilt by Delta Vee Motorsport Sticky Interiors --- Same as most modern Ferraris. Clean/strip or replace with carbon fiber ($$$) Door Sill Trim --- Rust/bend. Replace with factory or carbon. Dash / Airbag Cover Shrinkage --- Varies by car. Replace as necessary Seat Position Sensors (spiders only) --- Horrible quality sensor causes all kinds of problems OFTEN. Rebuild by Jeff Carriker only permanent solution. ($$$) Flying buttress bodywork crack (berlinetta/GTS only) --- Similar to 348 issue where they meet quarter panel. Not sure about fix. Never heard of any issues with OBDI cars. 5 extra HP versus OBDII cars. No idea if they’re more difficult to pass smog since SC has no check for that. I know these cars have a recently publicized issue for maintenance, but they’re really no different than any Ferrari. Yes, the engine-out belt service is expensive.
Yes, the problems listed above can be very expensive to fix if you’re starting from scratch. But like the 348s, by now most of these issues have been addressed by previous owners. It’s absolutely worth buying a more expensive car from
a trusted dealer or documented private party than from a “bargain” auction or fly-by-night used exotic place. But if you know anything about exotics, that should be in the “Duh” category already. These are 20 year old cars now, and they will certainly have
their share of 20 year old problems, just like any Camry or Jeep. The parts are expensive, but there is a huge DIY knowledge base here, on FChat, on YouTube and elsewhere. It’s a great car with a classically elegant design that is aging beautifully. As an aside, mine will be for sale shortly. I love the car, but I am doing more and more track events and a spider with no roll-hoops is disallowed at most
tracks, so I’m selling it to get a more track-appropriate car. All of the issues above have been correctly fixed on this car. I have a minor A/C fan problem to fix and then she’s on the market. On Behalf Of Doug & Terri Oldest 355’s allegedly had thin cast intake runners. Great for racers – Bad for daily drivers.
Allegedly (yet again) The Factory (choral chant heard in back ground) took these back and fixed affected F355’s with heads sporting more robust intake runners. Question – anyone know if said allegations are factual? Onward DOUG From: Ferrari [mailto:ferrari-bounces+dnt=dock.net [at] ferrarilist.com]
