Those of us that received PhDs in chemical engineering with a material science concentration know that ALL polymers will break down, and I'm sure that even Fritz at Bosch didn't have antioxidant technology perfected in the mid 80's.  These things have a shelf life to them, same reason you have to replace the bladder on a Euro spec F40 every 10 years, we're not machining these things out of platinum.

Remember, they're just cars.  Planned obsolescence is real.

Generally filters, the older (more used) they get, work better and better – until the moment that nothing gets through - - - air, oil, condensed a/c fluids, and fuel.  That is until the moment if they burst.  Then ho boy –

20 years ago we bought our ’78 carbed 308.  Came from Kansas and the second owner in Minneapolis.  Going thru the previous owners paperwork – many, Many, MANY bills for carb overhaul.  Why?  Turns out first owner took the car to Guido, the prized Ferrari, Ford F250 and lawnmower shop in West Bumscrew Kansas kept putting the wrong tractor filter in the fuel filter housing.  When we took it down for new fluids service 3 days after it arrived here - there it was – a too small filter cocked to one side.  Why even use a filter?

Alas.
