The days of large displacement, multi-cylinder engines are numbered. Manufacturer’s hands are tied because of world-wide pollution regulations. I don’t buy their excuses when they say that customers don’t want manual transmissions because there is still a demand for them. Modern automatics keep the engines running at a sweet spot for best power/torque at the lowest possible RPM (minimum of seven speeds. There are also 8, 9 and ten speed auto boxes!). Modern computer tech and design can make turbos run without lag, and the smaller displacement helps with reducing pollution output. Less is more. It’s only to meet the numbers. Manufacturers like Ford and GM can have their halo cars with big V-8s because it’s offset with lots full of grocery-getters. That’s CAFE working in their favour. Ferrari and Lamborghini don’t (or not now at least). Aston Martin tried to pull it off with offering their Cygnet “luxury” micro urbanite rule-bender (and they publicly admitted it as such) and... Well... We know how well that worked out. Peter Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Fellippe Galletta Do you guys think that if Ferrari eschewed turbocharging in their V8 cars, that at some point a V10 would be/would have been sought after once the displacement neared/exceeded 5.0 liters? The Gallardo started off at a 5.0L, and the LFA a 4.8.....it seems this is the sweet spot for a flat plane crank exotic motor of 10 cylinders.
Maybe Ferrari goes back to the F310B just like they did the 641 for the F50. I'm not a huge fan of the V10 sound, but seeing that the LFA made a pretty sweet sounding one, I'd imagine Ferrari would be able to do just as good or better.
