Share your opinion.  Nice order on the Sig....   for similar reasons (short, hyperacusis), I've been looking for a Bullpup.  My FFL has been saying for months he'll have a dozen of the Tavor SAR B16s. Your story rings true.

Yep, the shotgun is best for most and I keep a tactical.   But for the hand safe under the bed I defer to experience.  I don't remember his last name but there was an old fellow named Elmer that used to write for Guns & Ammo.  His philosophy was if you can't get your little finger down the barrel it isn't worth having and in your home you probably only need to shoot 20 feet at most.  So for home defense, .44 special with cupped slugs installed backwards.   Subsonic, kicks like a mule, never exits.   Test fired 30+ years ago, cleaned, (fortunately) never fired since.

There is also a sign on the driveway that says I don't call 911, I have 1911...  (and a Richard Marcinko quote)

Dog is a Basset, so unless the intruder is allergic to slobber, not much use.

I agree that a shotgun is the best idea for most home defense. Wide pattern means you don’t have to aim as well in a stressful situation and reduced penetration through sheetrock reduces the possibility of hitting unintended targets through walls.

My personal issue with that is twofold – first, I have four German Shepherds in the house. They will always be our first responders, and if an assailant doesn’t injure them, I certainly don’t want to either. So I prefer a precise pattern. I also depend on my ears for my living, so anything I can do to protect them in this scenario is important.

So my choice is a Sig Sauer MCX short barreled rifle (9”) in .300 Blackout with a suppressor. With the folding stock, the Sig is significantly shorter than most shotguns (more maneuverable navigating a dark house) and with subsonic ammunition doesn’t make any more noise than dropping utensils on a kitchen counter. The Sig is a heavily modified version of an AR with all the attendant advantages – reliability and accessorization. With a red dot sight, a laser and a flashlight it’s a lightweight and effective solution.

The problem with it? I still don’t have it, even though I bought it in November of 2016. The government has been delaying it for 15 months so far, and it looks like it will be at least another two months before my Form 4 application is even at the top of the pile at ATF. After Sig built it, it took the Feds months to get the Form 3 to Sig (allowing them to transfer it to a dealer). Until that happened, I couldn’t get the serial numbers to apply for my Form 4s (for the short barrel and the suppressor). ATF is currently running a 9 month backlog on those applications, with individual stories having run as long as 13 months.

So you’ll forgive me if I laugh at anyone who calls for more government intervention. They failed on every possible level in the Parkland shooting, and their laughable inefficiency is certainly not going to fix anything going forward. Just my opinion…

Good question Condor 13!
I grew up in Florida hunting and fishing and continue to do so to this day.  As a teenager, I was a Trap shooter and competed in local events.  I was also pretty good at Strafing in the F-4.  They gave us 90 rounds of 20 mm and if you were good, in three bursts (we used to bet 5 cents a hole) you could win a little money!  As an aside, I have seen many Fighter Pilots nearly kill themselves trying to win 50 cents!  I am an avid Quail hunter and have a friend who has 6 great bird dogs and we hunt on a beautiful 8k acre ranch here. (west Texas).  I have 9 shotguns and 4 pistols.  We use the pistols for target shooting in the off season.  You will note that I do not have a rifle.  I am not a big game hunter.  I might get a .22 for my Grandson and go squirrel hunting, but, that would be it.  If I were to want to hunt Deer, Elk etc. I would get a high quality Weatherby or Kar bolt action .270.  While in the Military I was qualified with the short version of the AR-15, I think that it is the GAU-8.  Let me tell you, you can't hit shit with that thing on full auto.  These ARs are also really light caliber and not appropriate for big game hunting.

So, why in the hell would I want one?  For home defense, my choice of weapons would be a Tactical Shotgun.  There is one out now that is compact and holds 20 rounds.  However, one can make the case that in the event of a regional or national disaster, like an EMP or Cyber attack where one would be without power for 6 weeks or more, It might be good to have one around for offense/defense and self preservation.  The caliber is also universal, so, there is lots of ammo around and that would be useful for barter as well.  Therefore, the only case I can make for having one is Disaster Prep.  If they were to be banned without encroaching on other types of weapons, I could live with it!  Thanks for stirring this up Clyde

Ok so with all the weapons you can buy out there all calibers etc
Why would anyone want to buy an AK -47 or an M-16 lookalike?
I really would like to hear the pro argument on this?

Ok
Let me hear from those who think we need to have access to M-16 weapons!
My vote is no
The only individuals who should have access to military style weapons are in fact the military
The wannabes Seals, Special Ops idiots you see at Bass Pro shops who are dressed in camouflage and have never served a day in the military, let alone been in sustained combat are hurting us

My head is down
