There are a lot of us who do "go Mach 2", who record laptimes, and are in it for the podium.
For us, we have to pick the best tool for the job.
Today, that tool is not the high end exotic car.
Please watch one of the Motor Trend videos to see how fairly the tests are usually run.
Same day, same driver, same track.
It is definitely not a pro driver vs Joe Doughnut Gut.
I understand people will dislike the "Muscle car" but to discredit the performance and engineering based on there not being a need for it seems strange. No one I know buys a 488 to try to compete with some muscle car on the track The American car crowd can keep there lap times I flew the the F-4 it was a Mach 2 capable aircraft Never went Mach 2 Never needed too Still got the job done Lash when and if you ever bring your Ducati to the the track you will witness what I say It’s the guy or girl at the controls The Muscle car crowd needs number shit to vindicate themselves in the market place and it’s only done with a trained professional at the helm The average JOE BAG O DOUGHNUTS isn’t going to get anywhere near those times Ferrari is a marquee Chevy will never be that and they know it !

FG, I was just reading an article about the new ZR1 which will surely be under 7:00 at the Ring when it makes an official run.
It may even challenge for fastest production street car ever.
Impressive when you consider that the current C6 Z06 is in the sub 7:10 range (estimated) and even the old C6 ZR1 is still in the mix with all of the current exotics.
The fact that the Corvette has shown to be a seriously engineered track weapon in the sub $500k category for the last 12 yrs is very impressive.
Even scarier is that the $69k Camaro ZL1 1LE is also more developed and faster than most current exotics under $500k. I surely would not want to be in a 488, Mclaren 650S or 911GT2 at VIR with a new Camaro on my tail.
It is a great time to be a track enthusiast! All this silly arguing.....LOL.
There are guys on Fchat, Lambopower who question the merit of an F12 or Superfast because it cannot outrun a McLaren 720S in a 1/4 or 1/2 mile race.....comical what people will debate over.
I love that there is legitimate competition amongst cars in 2018. Back in 1998, you threw in a Corvette in the big boy comparo to be nice but you knew ultimately it didn't have a shot at winning.
I'm not so sure the Vettes are the ultimate sport/track car Lashdeep, but they are plenty good enough and they are visceral.
As for mid/rear vs. mid/front, Ferrari decided back with the Maranello that mid/front was good enough dynamically for most drivers that the more exotic layout wasn't needed for handling prowess. So far they have been correct all along.
Of course I believe you would concur that from a purely visceral standpoint, a mid engine (classical) car is the pinnacle for your exotic driving experiences. If it went away, Lamborghini would go out of the business the next day. All of the Ferrari hypercars will always be mid engined for the same reason. It can turn what would be an absolutely boring car into something "interesting".....(Toyota MR2/MR2 Spider for instance).
A mid-engined special edition Vette model that goes all out to battle exotics would be fascinating to see. You keep your bread and butter front engined cars to keep the revenue up, and essentially make your Ford GT competitor. Such a car would probably need to offer a dual clutch transmission in addition to the stickshift, maybe even delve into the DOHC/flat plane crank arena.....but no matter what, would need to have a proper high end interior. The vette has come a long, long way with the C7 (as did the Gen 5 Vipers) in this department......and they might have to go a bit more.
Excited to see what comes of this. I bet GM would make a "more fun" car than McLaren could.
