Not quite sure what the delay is.  Certainly the dogleg from 1 to 2
doesn't help.
But if you look up vintage magazine tests, some of them show an
acceleration curve.  There is a brief flat spot wherever the shifts
occur.  On period Ferraris, that flat spot is a bit long, but just on
the 1-2 shift.

With my (ex) car, I shifted out of 1st just after the car got rolling
and treated it as a 4 speed (2 through 5) from there on.
