Seems this thread diverged a bit, but going back to the original, bought a couple of cars that were not new: 1. 308GT4 - on consignment. Got a PPI from a very, very highly recommended mechanic. He took the car home overnight, did compression (hey, it's a older car....), and a bunch of tests. 40 miles of highway and stop and go city traffic. Called with the results. Now, this guy is Italian, has an accent. Said "It's a gooda car". I said "It's cheese?" Ended up being a terrific car. Ran really well, after a bit of tuning, it pulled 225 *wheel* HP, which I thought was outstanding for a 2 valve carb car. 2. Maserati QP - Sport GTS. Hmmmm....... Bought from a Maserati dealer. Would not recommend them. Got tons of run-around. They even pulled a full credit report on me, which pissed me off because it was a cash transaction. Would not give service history, because supposedly it violated California privacy laws to potentially divulge prior owners. But..... Car got a comprehensive service: rotors and pads, all filters, new Pirelli PZeros (is that a good thing?), and lots of other stuff. Charged me for a LoJack system, which I vehemently said I didn't want. Turns out they never installed it, and I got a refund months later. Whatever. But it has been a superb car. Done several lengthy road trips with zero - as in no, none - problems. Doing another 1800 mile trip next week. Italian Limo! Hans.
