Re: R12 conversion to R134a R12?

I have a co-worker in our facilities department that does HVAC (home/business) on the side as a licensed Trane dealer. He's also a car collector/drag-race nut, and he said that now that almost no cars on the road use R-12 anymore, the value of R-12 has deeply plunged.

On my 91 Volvo 940, my father-in-law helped me recharge the system after a hose developed a leak. I replaced the hose and he went to charge it and couldn't get his 134 charge connections to connect. Long story short, he put some adapters on to get the 134 into the system, not realizing it really truly was an R-12 system. I know you're not supposed to do that, I had NO idea what we were doing and just trusted him, but as it turned out, that "fix" lasted just fine for many years. Now the A/C compressor or clutch has died on that car (I can't believe I've actually had that car 24 years), but I seriously doubt we'll go back to R-12. In fact if all goes well, he's buying that car for his housekeeper, so the long list of things to deal with on a car that's worth at best only a few hundred dollars is now no longer my list. Yay! See, I do occasionally get rid of cars, but sometimes it takes a while...

On the 308, the compressor started making a LOUD racket and the system was no longer blowing cold, so many years ago I simply removed the belt. When I finally get around to doing a few things to the car (like piston rings), I'll re-do the A/C system with the system Clyde mentioned recently, which is in fact the system originally designed in coordination with and for Rick Lindsay. If it works well in Houston, then Virginia should be a piece of cake. And I'm 49 now so I like A/C even better than when I bought my 308 when I was 27....

Those are absolute gold to repair shops. They can still use them for repair to period A/C units. When we sold our dealership, we had a very large inventory of R12 and sold them for around 100X what we had in them.
