We have had 6 new E, M and C class Mercedes over the years and most of them had significant repairs covered by the warranties. My wife’s 2011 C class had an ECU failure when it was two weeks old. It was out of action for a month waiting for a new one from Germany. We got a free loaner from the dealer but I would never own one of those cars out of warranty.

There is a reason they depreciate so quickly after warranty.

This is my biggest concern about my 308 and that really isn’t an “old”car.

Although, it’s just metal. Anything can be replicated (and made better)... At a cost.

I know you love your 575 and they are truly fantastic cars, but what worries me for long-term, future use and collectability of these modern classics are not the mechanical bits crapping out, but all of the electronics.

It’s one thing to adapt an older carbureted car to modern fuel injection and be done with it, but, with the modern car’s fully integrated OBD systems, if one of those ECUs crap out, you’re done. I think you mentioned that if you jump-start a 456/550, you stand a good chance of frying the air bag ECU and those are NLA.

Again, computers are computers and it could be made to work, but it would be a bigger challenge.

Anyone who bought high is going to get burned. These “modern classics”
were run up too high to begin with. Granted, the manuals will command a
premium for a number of years to come, but $600K+ for a 6-spd 599?
$400K+ for a 575 Superamerica?

What I’d be curious to know, will this affect the prices of the older
classics? TRs have dropped significantly, but I haven’t seen big
movement in the 308/328 series... And Enzo-era cars?...
