That’s a pretty apt description of Vancouverites... You mean to say there are more out there like that?

_________________________________________________________________I would expect “kids” living in suburban and especially rural areas getting into cars, but only for the purpose of getting around. Forget the urbanites, there’s no need. Public transport has improved and ride-hailing/car sharing are the norm. City planning and governance don’t help make car-ownership easy either.
We’ll still be driving around for many, many years to come, but the culture has changed for sure.

Subject: Re: [Ferrari] Recent auction pricesIt has been my observation that "social media" and cell phone addiction has had a negative impact on Car Culture. In my day (but not quite as old as cLyDe) I had my permit in hand and my Dad had me at the DMV to get my license the morning of my 16th birthday. A car meant you could go to your friends house, hang out with your friends at other locations and go to the Drive-ins. Heaven forbid you had to talk to a girl on the corded phone hanging on the kitchen wall.
Today, kids are always in contact with their friends on their damn phones. They don't care if they see their friends as they are texting them all day long. Many are not getting licenses until they are 18, some not at all. Most have no interest in the car that gets them physically to a movie theater... which they go to, to actually watch a movie... so they can text about it in snapchat.

I see small groups of my generation and younger (I’m 43) that are interested in cars and do get their hands dirty, but no where near what it used to be.
cLyDe, your generation was into cars because not only was it an _expression_ of freedom and success, but in some ways, was a necessity. People travelled to work over long distances from the suburbs everyday. You’d also have to be quite involved in the maintenance of the vehicle too as they weren’t just “turn-key”. I remember when I was a young kid (single-digit age), my Dad doing tune-ups several times a year on the family car. That would’ve been the Mercury Monarch (I think a ’77). That would have been the last car he owned that would have used a carb and points, as the next car after that was the first gen Mercury Topaz (’84) and I believe it used FI and electronic ignition (my Dad was a Ford guy for decades). After that, other than doing oil changes and brakes, that was it for the afternoon wrench sessions. Freed up a lot of time.
Not sure either what the next money-maker is. If you find out, can you let us know?
