I agree about the cheap car.  For straight up fun, Miata.  Easy to own, cheap to repair and the SPECMiata class SCCA has a giant schedule and always plenty of competition.

Something bad happened to Dennis in the Radical.  Don’t remember if it was failure or crash, but the car was smashed.  Dennis was bruised but otherwise fine.  Until then, everything Dennis had posted about the car was praise.

I don’t know if he’s still lurking here, but Dennis Liu has a Radical. I haven’t got to drive it yet, but he says it’s pretty spectacular, although a little brutal on the body to drive. Some tracks require arm straps, which makes it difficult to give point bys (although there may not be many of those once you get to know the car J).

I don’t know your skill level or history, but most instructors and programs say that you’ll learn a lot more a lot more quickly by buying a car that has lower power and fewer driver’s aids – Miata, E36 M3, Boxster/Cayman. When I started to get into track events seriously I started shopping for a 987.2 Cayman. It got some modifications that make it more track appropriate versus the earlier 987. Cheap to buy and to run. Some tracks have restrictions against convertibles that don’t have hardtops or cages, which is why it makes more sense than a Boxster.

For better or worse, while shopping for the Cayman I took out a Corvette C7-Z06. Fell hard for it and bought it as my track car. I’ve been running it for about 2.5 years now and absolutely love it. It needed a few minor mods for track reliability, but it will run away from almost any street car except GT Porsches. You could save a bunch of money buying a Grand Sport, which gives you all the track goodies without the supercharger. Exceptional performer for the money.

Anything that gets you on the track is a good choice! Good luck.

Subject: [Ferrari] Radical versus Stohr?

After an awesome track experience, I've decided to retire my 308 from the racetrack, but still have the bug!

I was thinking about a Boxster track car and then local Ferrari guru suggested either a Radical or Stohr dedicated track car...

Do you guys have any experience with either of those, or others?

From the web info, both look awesome....490bhp/ton, 0-60 3.5sec, etc....

Thanks!

Mark
