Doug,
Sounds like an Aardvark, F-111.
Lost one while as was at Cannon AFB in the 70's, bird strike, unfortunately the pod didn't help in that instance. I used to read the IG reports and it seemed like at least twice a month there would be a lost canopy incident where someone pulled the wrong handle at the wrong time. Not cheap, but always wondered what would happen in the F-111.

Yeah – thanks ClYdE
Picture this – 1975 and I am at McClellan AFB in Sacramento, CA, as a young Army captain attending a meeting. After the meeting, and since my dad had been assigned there when I was born I wanted to poke about.
In uniform no one bothered me having been raised by Ferrari Willi to go anywhere with authority no one will bother you, I went into a hanger – there it was – not the whole plane . . . just the “escape pod.” What a cool idea. Instead of going thru the roof or ejecting the canopy, a whole kernel of the fuselage ejected. It had vestigial wings for some sort of flight control.
I don’t know how well the idea actually worked but it looked like a good idea. Anyone . . . . ?
Cheers
Doug
