Yeah, the A models we had the P&W TF-30.   It needed some throttle management to prevent compressor stalls.  The B model (and the later D) had the GE-F110 engines.  That was the engine that airframe was waiting for!!  You could ram the throttles full forward and yank them back like a butter churn, no problems.   With the P&W though...  you did launch in Zone 5 reheat.  That was a hoot.  With the GE you only went full power without reheat...   not so much fun and no fire show, no shock diamonds...

But that story is weird, supposedly the command eject initiated by her RIO got him out before her... and she was sent straight into the water.  But the aircraft was recovered 19 days later as was she.   Some reports say she was still in the aircraft, meaning the "Eject CMD" switch was set to "Pilot".  How that was "set" varied among the Squadrons.

While that 1200+hrs looks like a big number, it's not.   By the time you finish your year of training and do your first training at sea FCLPs, that's the hours you are going to have...  still a nugget in the seat.   I had 1268... with only 10 day traps and 3 night traps.

Revlon...  or Hulk... (yeah, that was her first call sign.  no, she wasn't a beast, it was a play on her last name)  was pushed through the system because she was a woman.  The system killed her, not the plane.  IMHO, she should have never been there.   She had failed her first FCLP (unsat) and was run through again... unheard of.  The Navy was racing to qualify a woman in a fighter before the Air Force.   Stupid

Karen, even with 1200 plus hours in the F14 – didn’t heed that flying is terribly unforgiving of any mistakes.

ehhh....  55-60 in the era of Erik's boss and my time.

Probably 30ft seas and a pitching deck...

It's still ugly seeing green water over the bow.

Never launched in it, but certainly came back to it a few times.

 

Not a game, serious business.  The plane, the boat and the sea are all trying to kill you.  Throw some of mother nature's weather in there....  

That's why Navy guys always stuck around in the fight... better to stay and fight an opponent with a conscience than go back to ugly trap conditions and mindless physics wanting to kill you.

My boss was an LSO in addition to being an E-2 pilot.  He will tell the story of landing planes off of Australia with green water coming over the bow in a storm. The deck is what, 80’ above the water?
