Then why when it comes to housing there is transparency?
Housing  cost way more than cars over all.
Why the secrecy ?
Why the underhanded valuation?

For what it’s worth, I’ve never found dealers willing to share actual selling prices with the public. Whenever I’ve been shopping for a car and found one that I like that sold before I could get it, calling the dealer and asking what it sold for is met with the “We sold it at the advertised price,” response about 95% of the time. The other 5% is usually within a few hundred dollars of asking price. These aren’t on common SUVs like Scottie was searching recently – these are on 6-figure exotics where you know they didn’t get the full ask.

Dealers do have a service they pay for which tracks actual selling prices – not just auctions but dealer-level sales. This helps them realistically value trade ins. I was shown a bit of it when I was considering consigning my 355 and Vanquish as that’s part of how they help you value a car. But access to that database is expensive and closely guarded for obvious reasons.

No dealer wants the public to have accurate pricing information, especially on used cars. That’s always where they’ve made the bulk of their money. Used and service. New cars are generally not profit centers. So for what it’s worth, I don’t think FML or any other group could hope to gather accurate transaction data outside of auctions. And while BaT certainly sells some nice cars, you can be sure that most of those are not as pristine as one would hope (or as the pictures show). So sales prices on transactions for truly nice privately sold cars will still never make it to light.

Agreed but that’s where FML could have taken the lead years back

But they didn’t and you know it

They could have been way ahead with the true transparency of what the cars actually sold for

But they didn’t

And still don’t

Like I said the internet changed all that and they FML are still holding on to their index of bullshit prices

How come there aren’t any prices in the Kelly blue book for Ferrari?

Or the so called black book?

It doesn’t matter for me

I know how to buy the cars and know what the market is

This conversation is more for the lurker out there who wants to buy one and now see the light in stead of the smoke filled room of FML yellow issues burning in the corner !

Wait a minute - EVERYONE advertises asking prices.

Almost every dealer advertises asking prices in their website.

DuPont Registry, etc - are all ASKING price.

I am shopping for a SUV for the wife right now and quickly learned that Advertised prices are bullshit.  The put up a price including ALL possible discount programs - so unless you are a vet, firefighter, who just graduated college, with that brand car as a trade - the “internet” price that the quote is total bullshit.  That is why sites like CarGurus and TruCar exist - to educate people on actual SELLING prices.

So, a compendium of vehicle’s and asking prices is helpful - it shows you were dealers and individuals are - to start. It helps you see who is unrealistic - $300K ’78 glass 308s vs. who is serious - $32K ’81 308GTSi.  Not perfect, but something.  And EVERY negotiation has to start somewhere.  As a seller you start high, as a buyer low - deals are made in the middle.

Before the internet FML was a resource - just like DuPont and my dozen or more daily faxes listing who had what vehicles at what asking price.

Agree that SELLING price is a more valuable metric - but that information is generally closely held by both buyer and seller (try to figure out the REAL value of a GTO, when almost none are sold publicly and almost all transactions are behind closed doors.  Even the ‘players’ often do not know of a swap until a car appears at a show or event with its new owner.). I can probably think of a dozen reasons why I wouldn’t want the price I paid to be public knowledge.

As said, FML served a purpose and the articles were also helpful - I really liked when Carbon was there and some of then deep dives he went on.  It is NOT a guide to cLyDe prices, but is probably still a good resource to gauge the feel and direction of the market as well as a relatively easy method to find most of the available vehicles of a type (like 355s) that are currently on the market.

Not some ASKING price if the publication is to be taken seriously

They have gotten away with this fantasy too long

The major issue is the dealers go along with it
