Re: There has been a buzz about Thorium reactors since I was at N2S2 in the late 80s...? as of this writing there are no operational Thorium reactors in the world. ? Lots of hype around PHWR/AHWR, no reality.? There are TONS (literally, hundreds of thousands) of Thorium in Australia...? no reactor.? The only widespread use of Thorium is in TIG electrodes when alloyed with Tungsten.? Even I own some of those. Thorium reactors are as rare as perfect Ferrari publications. Why would you use Thorium if you had enough Uranium, which we do, so far? Alvin Weinberg, here at ORNL pushed the Thorium Cycle since the late 1950's. They are more difficult to start, but they answer the riddle: " Q: If you put 20 tons of fuel into a reactor and run it for 5 years, how much do you have left? A: 25 tons" You can eve run them s pebble bed reactors like some of the new Gen4 Small Modular Reactors.
