Kalifornia, the cereal state – land of nuts and flakes - has a law on the books regarding repairs: “By law, the auto repair shop must provide a written estimate before doing any work. A written estimate must include the total estimated price for parts and labor for a specified repair or service. The estimate must also itemize the parts to be used and the method of repair. The repair shop must stick to the method of repair and the parts listed unless you agree in advance to any changes.” If you agree to the estimate, sign the work order, and the shop changes the method of repair OR does un-authorized work OR exceeds the estimate – repairs or charges exceeding the written estimate are free. If the shop runs into an unforeseen problem they must contact you or a person you authorized to get the OK to do those repairs and charges and so note the additional approval on the work order. That will not, uh, prevent a five figure estimate to do certain work but it should prevent the jaw dropping “5:00 surprise.” Cheers Doug From: Ferrari <ferrari-bounces+dnt=dock.net [at] ferrarilist.com> On Behalf Of Peter Rychel Pricing may be getting real, because the owners are finding out what it really costs to keep these on the road. Years ago, a good friend of mine who owned a TR mentioned what he paid for an engine-out belt change done at the dealer. This guy was not poor by any means. Partnered in a international company, West Vancouver mansion, owned a Daytona along with the TR, etc. When he got the bill for the service, his jaw dropped (a healthy five figures). Shortly afterwards, he got rid of it. He bought one more Ferrari after that but is now out of it completely. Since the big ramp-up of 2014/2015, people who would’ve bought on the upswing then, have probably gone through the first “recommended timing belt services” and are now wanting to get out after similar experiences (“...and what, I HAVE to do this every three years?...”).
