Noise is just wasted energy transfer.  A combustion engine is an air pump, that at best can be ~50% efficient.  Everything else is wasted as losses, usually as heat.

But hey, they last buggy whip manufacturer made the absolute best one before their market dried up, too.

With the upcoming electrification wave that is coming, it’s going to be even harder to justify the required maintenance on something old slow and archaic that was screwed together with northern Italian minimum wage labor.  Hell, even the new Hummer is going to have over a 1000 hp, Bentley has announced that they’re going to be all electric by 2030 (which means even they’ve given up on the W12 concept).  Say what you want about the true green factor of these cars, but from a performance standpoint, speed is pretty easy and maintenance is going to be more simplistic once the systems mature.  Which reminds me, I need to respond to that email that Rimac sent me on Tuesday.

I had this discussion with another group a few weeks ago, I finally switched to an Apple watch.  I’m getting more functional use out of it (just trying to close the fitness rings has resulted in a 14 pound weight drop in 6 weeks) and from a cost standpoint, even if I get a new one every 4 years, total cost of ownership still cheaper than servicing a Rolex every 10.

And real wealth is being able to no longer give a damn what other people think.

Pricing may be getting real, because the owners are finding out what it really costs to keep these on the road.

Years ago, a good friend of mine who owned a TR mentioned what he paid for an engine-out belt change done at the dealer. This guy was not poor by any means. Partnered in a international company, West Vancouver mansion, owned a Daytona along with the TR, etc. When he got the bill for the service, his jaw dropped (a healthy five figures). Shortly afterwards, he got rid of it. He bought one more Ferrari after that but is now out of it completely.

Since the big ramp-up of 2014/2015, people who would’ve bought on the upswing then, have probably gone through the first “recommended timing belt services” and are now wanting to get out after similar experiences (“...and what, I HAVE to do this every three years?...”).
