I have also had to reboot the phone to get things to work right.

It was most apparent in my Maps app than anything else.

That would lock up but everything else seemed to work ok.

I have noticed it’s more reliable if the phone is plugged in before I start the car/boot the radio.

 

Mine’s an iPhone XS Max with a Kenwood head unit.

After the latest apple upgrade 

My CarPlay doesn’t work with the USB cable but yet it shows charging the phone
