Clyde –

I think I’ve figured the CarPlay issue out. My head unit has both wired and wireless CarPlay. I don’t use the wireless since it requires a speed sensor to be hooked up to the head unit that I haven’t had time to do. But I think the latest iOS update prioritizes wireless CarPlay, so if the phone sees wi-fi, it looks to that first for CarPlay, which interferes with the USB connection.

If you turn off the Wi-Fi on your phone when you’re in the car, I think you’ll find things are dramatically better. With my phone Wi-Fi off, my CarPlay connects 100% of the time with the first plug of the USB cable. If I leave the phone Wi-Fi on, my CarPlay connects 15-20% of the time with the USB cable (although it always shows charging).

Try it and see. I’d be curious to see if your experience matches mine.

Yes. I sometimes have to unplug & replug my phone a number of times (2-6) to make it re-connect properly.

I have noticed it’s more reliable if the phone is plugged in before I start the car/boot the radio.

Mine’s an iPhone XS Max with a Kenwood head unit.
