If you get the chance to drive them both, take it.

The Euro car is claimed to be 300lbs lighter (cats, belts, door beams, Interior padding, lighter exhaust, etc.). Not sure what the exact delta is between the two but you can feel it.

Euro car is claimed to have 10hp more but the cam profiles sound much different and the engine feels much sharper and stronger.

Both contribute to a markedly different personality between the two...

No, I haven’t.

Although, I’m sure there isn’t a huge spread between the two. The TR ushered in a new era of “world car” design and engineering, so from the start, they could be easily certified for the U.S. market meeting crash and emissions regs. Euro market cars just did away with cats (except Switzerland), side marker lights and reinforced bumpers.

But that was the early ‘80s. If I remember correctly, manufacturers could use mouse trap seat belts as an alternative choice to installing air bags (and also the knee pads along the lower edge of the dash) when that came into effect towards the end of the ‘80s. More than likely not on the books back when they started the TR project.

Of note, Canadian-spec TRs were never required to have that stuff. They just had the normal dashboard and three-point seatbelts (still had DOT lighting and higher – 5 MPH – bumpers [identified by little boxes added to the top corners of the front grille to hide the stronger bumper shocks]), plus cats.

Peter, have you driven a US and Euro TR back to back?

The differences are...

My biggest concern with U.S. spec TRs are those mouse-trap seat belts. I’d always worry about those crapping out (like not running up and down when the door opens and closes). If I remember correctly, these are Delco components? I’m sure it’s all NLA with the various parts suppliers... Also not a fan of the extra dashboard padding and the “monodado” wheels.
