On my 1985, I used those wells as subwoofer enclosures. 

Did award-winning installations using four 12" Kickers in a solobaric 
face-to-face configuration. Sounded amazing. 

When that configuration got stolen, I did the same with two 12" Kicker 
Solobaric drivers. Less amazing, but decent.

What I hated the most with the introduction of anti-lock braking and later FX3 
was that the "well" behind the driver's seat used to be a good place for your 
ice and beer.
