Not a doctor - have been: a paramedic/EMT, lawyer, Ferrari dealership management, automobile storage entrepreneur, personal injury case manager, commercial and residential property manager, and … as of yesterday, will be entering the new and exciting world
of Residential Real Estate Photography. About 400 credits since my last degree - not interested in the paper (I have all my diplomas and eye candy in tubes under the bed) - just like continuing to learn.

I love this discussion. Are you all ok with revealing your professions and backgrounds? I am fascinated with how many heavy duty scientists and engineers are in this group.
I have an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering but as a university scholar I was able to customize my plan of study to add a ton of upper level and graduate level physics courses. That is where I first got exposed to lasers.
It is also where I had my first, what the hell is this moment with quantum physics.. I began grad school at MIT in the EE department but left to make money, get married and recover from, surprise, burn out. I went back to grad school after a couple of years
to pursue a PhD in Optical Engineering at the University of Rochester. Got my masters there and completed all of the PhD requirements aside from the dissertation before life intervened and my first son was born. I have spent my time since then working in
corporate research centers, mainly on laser design and applications.
I have gathered that I am not alone here as a corporate researcher.
Also, do we have any MDs in the house?
Eric,
Just to be clear, the 3 laws of thermodynamics, for civilians are:
1) You can't win
2) You can't even break even
3) You can't quit the game
The best theory (theories) in Physicsare summarized in the Standard Model
which includes QED and QCD, basically everything except gravity. The big
game now is the search for deviations from the Standard Model. Newton's
model lasted 400 years and you still build rollercoasters based on that one.
The current Standard Model is ~40-50 years old. Some od us are looking for
a non-zero neutron electric dipole moment as a deviation from the standard
model.
Regards,
George
