Forgive me if I have told you this story before – May 1981 – my bride of 6 weeks and I were on a Cathay Pacific flight from London to Hong Kong via Bahrain.  Somewhere over the Mediterranean, Nicosia air traffic controllers decided that 3 planes were getting too close and directed us all off on different vectors. Our plane’s vector ended up infringing Syrian air space. Back then, think Golan Heights missile crisis, etcetera, very feisty Israelis and all that tension.  Anyway, our Jumbo must have loomed onto Syrian radar because we suddenly had a bunch of Syrian fighters for company and we were forced down into Damascus, landing late afternoon. The alternative proposition given to our pilot was to be shot down, an option he decided not to take!  We were parked off from the end of the runway, and then the plane was surrounded by a bunch of vehicles and lots of tough looking guys emerged with machine guns and then appeared throughout the plane. The pilot and co-pilot were then taken away at gunpoint.  Cathay, essentially being a British company, was in trouble because Britain had no diplomatic relations with Syria.  However, in stepped the French to help out.  Hours later, the pilot and co-pilot came back and got on the intercom. We were going to be ok. Nicosia air traffic had confirmed we were flying on their instructions. We were free to go, well, almost... Except we now really needed fuel, and Damascus, not being a normal destination for Cathay Pacific, meant they had no fuel accounts there.  Eventually, the French arranged the fuel deal and it was paid by credit card.  Now we could go, yes?  Well, no.  Now the Syrians wanted landing fees in the form of $1,000 cash in US dollars, a lot of money back in 1981.  The pilot announced that he did not have that kind of money under the pilot’s seat, but we gathered the money with a passenger whip-around, and were eventually on our way again!  So London to HK took about 2 days more than usual but we were just happy that it all worked out ok.  Cheers, Grahame

I don’t know what planet you’re on

But the last time I checked

You can’t buy anything with a car!

The underworld drug cartel uses dollars for a reason

And when people are kidnapped they always ask for dollars not euros or yen

And ask anyone who travels extensively

The $100 bill will get you out of trouble than any other currency

All the more reason to have hard assets.  One reason I pulled the trigger and bought my car was so I could eventually give it away to my kids.  It will hold its value.  The dollar won't.

It's not that the cars are worth more, QE infinity has made the dollar worth less.

So let me see if I got this right

Someone paid let’s say $150 in 1989 most likely way more back then

Insured it for what 32 years let say for $1500/year=$48k

Maintenace from what I’ve read I figured at least $20k

So that totals to $218k

And it has 3800 miles

How much per mile is that?

These poor soles who think that there TR is going to bring them gold

All it’s bringing them is Lead!
