That is funny!

The 488 is a beast! The Maserati QP has a similar engine and even with its increased weight, it is a monster as well.

The last 15 yrs have been revolutionary for road cars. And, the last 7 have been just incredible in terms of performance and technology.

Good Lord, tell me about that.

Back in 2019, the dealer was having a test drive event, hosted up in West Vancouver, with our route being the road up to Cypress Mountain Ski resort (hosted part of the events from the 2010 Olympics). In any case it’s a popular spot for the rich kids hill-climbing their rides.

I got the general manager to accompany me on the ride. Great guy, I’ve known him for years and was one of their longest serving GMs they had. He asks me what car I want to try out. In a nano second I choose the 488 GTB. He tosses me the fob and I get in the driver’s seat right away.

We make our way up the road and after the first switchback the road straightens out, I turn to him and ask if I can punch it. “Sure, that’s what it’s made for”. I bury the throttle. I light up all of the RPM LEDs on the steering wheel and I get pushed back so hard into the seat that I’ve never felt that kind of force before. It has what, 660HP? I’m positive I unleashed all of them. I have no idea what speed I reached (probably in excess of 200km/h), but I backed off when I approached the next series of curves. I short-shifted my way up and toned down the whole affair. One of the scariest moments I had behind the wheel as I wasn’t expecting it to be that fast, that quickly. He just laughed! A regular day at the office for him I suppose.

Thing is, these cars are so sophisticated, you could drive this thing like grandma all day long that with a couple of pulls of the paddles and a good stab of the gas pedal, the Mr. Hyde personality is instantly released. It’s really too much to be honest.

Tell you what, the 308 at 110 MPH demands just as much attention and is still a thrill! Still can land me in jail too...

P.S. Does that mean I can out-drink you guys in Montreal next year? 😉

It can get interesting although it is much safer today than it was 20-30 years ago from a vehicle standpoint.

Imagine how much room you would need to get my '81 308 up to anything resembling fast...130-140.

Then fast forward 20 yrs to a quick car like Clyde's 575 and how much easier that exercise is. It takes much less room on an open road.

Now imagine the same difference between a 308 and 575 to a modern performance car.

Today's cars are brutally fast and you can hit 150-160 almost anywhere at anytime with just a little bit of room.

I’ve never felt comfortable driving like that amongst no-minds.

It hasn’t happened yet with the Mondial, but there have been occasions with the 308. What did I do? I went SLOWER...

It gives them a good view to take in the detail of the bumper, the trunk, the horsey badge, etc. Considering the intelligence level, the attention span also matches, which they then get bored, pull out to pass and then leave me alone. I carry on, bring the car back up to speed once clear and then have the road to myself.

I did a lot of stupid things behind the wheel when I was younger. When I bought the 308 in my twenties, I realized what I had was more than just a car and took better care when driving. Not that I didn’t drive fast, but was exceptionally careful.

Just a quick story: Coming back home from an FCA event in Seattle years ago, I had my Dad with me, that after an hour and half of driving, he’s fast asleep in the passenger’s seat. There’s a particular section of I-5 in Washington which I quite enjoy. It’s scenic, it’s curvy and is usually empty as it’s in between towns. I also know it’s not well patrolled because there aren’t many convenient hiding spots. I looked as far up the highway and it was empty, no one behind me. So, I gently squeeze the throttle. 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110... At that point, the engine is really humming along and the volume is definitely increased. This wakes him up. He looks out the side window and notices the trees are just a green blur. He looks over at me and tries to look at the speedo and says: “How fast are we going?” At this moment I’m catching up to cars ahead and back off. Me: “Uhhh, fast?”. He shakes his head, turns to the side and promptly goes back to sleep. He knew. This was the same guy who survived two crashes on his motorcycle, back in the ‘50s. Keep in mind, nobody wore helmets back then.

Ok if any of you know the Dodge Challenger crowd please let them know that they can’t out accelerate or out handle a 575.

This is an urgent public safety announcement

I was coming home from a slot car race on I -75 just north of Tifton Ga when this bubba in a comes up on me. I was doing all of 80 at the time in 6 th gear.

With at least 2 plus miles of clear unobstructed on I -175 ( you could land a plane here and yes I would know ) view an no traffic he stays on my bumper even after I move all the way over to the right.

Tired of this I down shift to 3rd and floor it, shifting at the high 6 mark.

The brick tries to follow, only to be a speck in the rear window.

I touched 160 briefly when I realized that was insane.
So please someone go on the red neck web boards and show them a picture of a horse, and tell them when they see this picture they they should not try to play with it!

Full throttle acceleration in a 575 is unbelievable.

There is nothing like. 12 cylinder, nothing.

Except flying a fighter with afterburners.

Get used to It Lash….
