They’re breathtaking in person.

Paul is an incredible guy and the talent just oozes out of him. These bikes were completely scratch-built – he made all of the molds for the engine castings and went through several foundries to get the pieces just perfect. In fact, there were a lot of stuff he had to reverse-engineer as there are no drawings or blueprints left. He does all of his own machining and welding.

I’ve been in his shop which is a non-descript former chicken coop on his small acreage. It’s bright and clean and packed with mountain biking and motorcycling history. Amazing...

Thanks! There are plenty I left of the list that would be very tough to see in person. That Ulenhaut would qualify there.

The Costin Zagato Maserati 450S that was turned into a road car is really interesting.

My bike appreciation is more about what I liked as a kid. I do really like the classic TT machinery too...Norton, Matchless, etc.

Those Excelsiors look amazing!!!!

That is an incredible list you got there Lash and I like the fact you have an appreciation across the spectrum of the automobile – from the Art Deco era up to modern times.

Your bike list is all modern though. I really like the antique stuff, especially old board track racers – just an engine and wheels, no clutch or brakes!

A friend of mine who lives about 8 blocks away from me is cycling legend Paul Brodie. He’s not into building bikes anymore, but is now teaching (or was since COVID) and also getting into his motorcycling roots. Best known for building a run of Excelsior replicas:

I thought Ghia had some cool cars along the way.  The DeTomaso Pantera is an interesting beast.  The Karmann Ghia was too good looking for its engine.  It was actually the first car I ever drove.  Had a Porsche 912 engine in it.  Yellow.  My father loved that car.  I totaled it.

Giugiaro at Italdesign also had some funky but cool designs.  The Alfa Romeo GTV, the Lotus Esprit, the Maserati Bora and Merak, the BMW M1, the DeTomaso Mangusta, the DeLorean, the Subaru SVX and even the VW Sciracco.

After Pininfarina, I like Giugiaro.  But, honestly, Pininfarina and Ferrari were far and above everyone else.  It is like putting an engine designed by Enzo into a car sculpted by Michelangelo.

Indeed. Also forgot Nembo too (and Rob Garven posted pics of that lovely example about a month or two ago).

There was also Ghia-Aigle of Switzerland. I think two or three cars were bodied by them.

Sbarro did a series of funky concept cars based on modern chassis.
