Reactions to life threatening situations have to be non-thinking.  First time I heard a few pearls of wisdom like that was from a few Indy racers – 1) never right at Indy; and, 2) “spinal cord reaction”.

Example – watch a baby try to eat their first bowl of ice cream.  Spoon in the ice cream, up to the mouth – hit forehead – hit chin – hit nose – mouth.  Ahhh.  Second bite – hit chin, cheek, nose, mouth.  Third or many more . . . . from ice cream in dish to mouth.

“See – think – do” is replaced with “see – do.”

And that’s what practice practice practice is to accomplish.

Onward

Your last 4 words are precisely what we have been saying about flying.

I don't know I'd say half are below average...  perhaps half are under trained for the unexpected.

But when you go into combat as a pilot, you better know you are the best... else there is no reason to go up.  You're just wasting tax payer dollars.

That seems to be the most common guess out there.  Any chance the guy had a medical issue?  The sad thing is that he was well known as a very good doctor who probably saved many lives.  He was also supposedly at least a decent pilot.  Not everyone can be the best.  Half of the people who fly are below average pilots.  But it doesn't sound like he was even in that category.  The videos are brutal.

Looks like the engines were ok.

But, he was disoriented and not seeing or believing his gauges.

This is pilot error.  sadly.

If you look at the video of the crash he was airborne for quite a while and had sufficient altitude to recover if he knew what to do

Most likely never practiced an engine failure at takeoff

He basically flew the airplane to the scene of the crash with power

It's the plight of many GA pilots...

Get a plane, have fun, go places

Get a bigger plane, multi engine, take more people with you, go faster

One engine failure, asymmetric thrust

Don't know how to correct yaw and lift changes in asymmetric condition

First to the scene of the crash.

It was a real problem with the Turkey (more so than Clyde's Rhino) because the engines were so far apart.  But, so were the HUGE Vertical tails...  for that reason.  Center hull carried the  Phoenix, so worth the trade-off.

Can't image what it was like for the SR-71 guys.

Engines much further apart, and one goes from sucking hundreds of thousands of cubic feet of air to brick wall in an instant.

And someday, some day...  Erik is really going to explain an "unstart" to me.

OK, I know WHAT it is, I still don't fully understand how an "unstart" happens.

I am pretty sure he wasn't airborne or flying anymore when he crashed.

Do we know he had an engine failure?
