Why?   don't know.

I have a lady friend who lives up in Seattle and is very involved in the shipping industry.   She says right now, regardless of the weights and tariffs,  40ft Conex going from China to anywhere will cost you $20K, before you put a single piece of paper in it.  That same empty box going to China from anywhere is only $2K... if you can find a ship.    Who is establishing these prices?  It's no wonder airlines are using underused aircraft to haul freight out of the Orient.

And why is this happening at all?

Great info Britt.

When do you see the situation improving? Or are there too many moving parts at play to predict that reliably?

I think it depends entirely on what way you are shipping and what the rates are on a particular week. Currently getting containers from Mexico to Europe are about 200 percent up. Mexico to China near.y impossible to find a ship . China to Europe about 400 percent up. USA to Europe only about 50 percent up. Totally depends. Just have to check. I don’t ship from Europe out to NA so I don’t know what the changes are.

I have read about the current shipping logistical challenges and it is interesting to hear your experience. How much more expensive was this transport than if it had been done pre-pandemic?

I'm asking as I want to ship a few cars and bikes back from the UK but have been waiting for some of the shipping quotes to come down.

Thanks,

LSJ

All of it. Global shipping is a problem, I work with it daily at work. Effectively the ship arrived 3.5 weeks later than scheduled due to port delays prior to Savannah. This meant we missed the connection from Bremerhaven to Sweden. Buts all is  well, car is safe with me. Maybe I can’t get it through first inspection before winter comes but next Spring I’ll be exercising her in the Swedish woods!

Britt, nice work!

$4500 isn’t bad at all. How much of the four week delay was due to pandemic logistical problems?

She left 4 weeks late from Savannah, just missed the hurricane, popped into the U.K. and then Bremerhaven. Was transferred to a local freighter and sent to Gothenburg. That took about 4 weeks. Then cleared customs with a massive bill and sent by truck from Gothenburg to my house in North Stockholm. Now waiting on paperwork so I can get it through the import inspection and get plates on her. Doubt that will happen before the snow and salt and grit hits so maybe next May. It’s been a long journey and Clyde was very helpful with all the paperwork that I had to get from him to do the import. Oh, I flew to Atlanta in June to see him and the car and to do the purchase.
