Peter,

He was talking in comparison to other family.  The sad thing is, I don't think it was always this way.  I understand why he feels that way though.  Let's just say that I don't let my other brother-in-law's issues keep me from visiting my other sister.  But I also don't hold back from saying what I want to say when he "starts".  I haven't visited since buying the Ferrari due to their fear of Covid.  Thanksgiving will be the first time I see them in 2 years.  I am sure there will be some snide remarks.  Don't get me wrong, he has his good moments too.  It is the ego that causes Mr. Hyde to come out.

Tony

P.S. The nice brother-in-law is named Peter.

Very well said Anthony. We’re on the same page in many aspects. I differ in that I do attach sentimental/intrinsic value to the Ferraris, at least with the 308. I’ve literally grown up with that car and the path that it has taken me down in life has lead me to this point where the people I’ve met because of it, has meant the most to me. It’s no secret Rob Garven is like the brother I never had and there are a few car club members who I consider, literally like family as well. Now, if it was any other car, would I have those same kind of friendships/relationships as well? Maybe yes, maybe no. But what I have now, I appreciate and won’t want to give it up.

We’ve talked about this off the ‘List before, but in regards to your brother-in-law, it’s more than just the house, it’s the fact he’s with family that makes him feel good and content. That’s more with the traditional values you were all raised with than anything else. Something which I can see is lacking in a lot of society today.

Home is where you make it. I visited my childhood neighborhood in Montreal many years ago and it did nothing for me. I could’ve been standing on any other street and would’ve felt the same. My Grandparent’s place however, that brought back a tremendous amount of nostalgia (I was more amazed that after 70+ years, it was still standing and in decent shape). My current home now? Meh. It’s warm and dry and close to work. Even if I sold both Ferraris, I still couldn’t make the upgrade, so I’ll content myself with what I have and have the Ferraris parked in the garage as well. I am happy living here on the West Coast and this to me, is home now. I’m a very fortunate guy...

Yes, it is somewhat ironic but there is a distinction.  At least, in my case, I can say that I know I don't need the Ferrari.  I am well aware it is a want and I could let it go tomorrow.  It doesn't contribute to my identity and there isn't anything in my life that depends on me having it.  I could also easily live in a smaller house and I would have no qualms with driving a Kia for my daily driver.  In fact, given the shit happening with my Toyota, I am starting to wonder if there is any difference at all anymore.  I grew up poor but I still loved my parents.  I never lose sight of that.

One of my brother-in-laws recently called me to tell me that he loves to visit us because he feels comfortable in our house and relaxes.  The reason is that the focus is on the food and the conversation.  I am grateful for my house but it isn't anything special.  And it is "well lived in".  After two boys and two dogs it could use some TLC but I am in no rush to keep up with the HGTV crowd.  There are weeds in my yard and my gardens because my wife hates chemicals.  There is a Toyota and a Subaru in the driveway and the Subaru is just about ready for the junk yard.  I have sucked every ounce of life out of that car.  My son is more attached to it than I am because, to him, it was his first car and remembers me working on it.  But the point is that you can spill your coffee in my house and no one will care.  Got some mud on your shoes?  Whatever.  Break something?  Probably isn't worth much and, to me, it is always just a "thing".  I rarely attach sentimental value to anything.

You all do see the irony of this, because we all own Ferraris... Talk about something a person doesn’t “need”. Worse, except for cLyDe going to buy a new one, the majority of us own used Ferraris which are basically just rich people’s hand-me-downs.

I don’t think it is immoral capitalism, it’s just part of the human condition.

Ego is a weakness that is easily exploited, add money and ideology to the mix and compromise is a walk in the park.

And I expect that line to get a chuckle from those that understand the process...

To get an idea of how easy it is to control people look at DeBeers and how they created an entire market to sell their crystallized carbon into.  And it goes beyond intelligence.  Some of the smartest people are totally susceptible to control through their ego.  Do they deserve what they get or is DeBeers a valid example of immoral capitalism?  It is crap like that enables the newest generation of communists to justify their BS.  So, yeah, those commercials you speak of are nauseating and sad all at the same time.  Marketing is the immoral science of manipulating people to buy shit they don't need.

The other vastly overused word in today's self gratification class is "deserve".

I cringe every time I hear a commercial talk you deserve their product.

Doug,

I am old enough to remember a time when everyone couldn't have everything.  I remember when people didn't think they were entitled to having anything they wanted.  Now, everyone has a "right" to everything.  Greed is based in fear and fear is the easiest way to control people who, even after millions of years of evolution, are still nothing more than scared, ego driven, animals.  The shit that passes for "normal" these days is amazing.  We are just another Roman Empire and we are falling in exactly the same way.

Yikes – what will ever happen to Disney’s Christmas ornaments or trinkets purchased for 4¢ and sold for $7.25?

The shame of it all Anthony.
