_________________________________________________________________Monteverdi "Purple Smoke"... which was really more of a wine color. The one with the Boxer paint was the Hai, not to be confused with the High (Speed) 375 model. I think Hai means "Shark" in Swiss. I had read they had a De Dion rear end, but the one I saw Germany had a ZF.Lash and I both have a thing for Hemis and the Hai was 426 Hemi powered. I think there were only 3 made??? I just can't image what the front/rear weight ratio was.On Sunday, October 31, 2021, 09:13:03 PM PDT, Peter Rychel <dino308gt4 [at] hotmail.com> wrote:Ha, I don’t think Ferrari would ever claim they got inspired by DeTomaso!
I forgot about the Monteverdi. I believe the first one they built was purple and all one color. I only remember another they built and it was either grey or silver and yes, had the lower part painted black (with their name in bold, body-colored graphics along with it).
A friend of mine had mentioned this theory that painting the lower part black, or matt black would make lower fender and rocker panel repairs not as noticeable, if the repairs were less than perfect (because EVERY ‘70s car rusted, even while you looked at it).
In Ferrari’s case, those first Boxers employed the use of integrating the bumpers into the bodywork. Maybe in some ways, the fiberglass did not give an appropriate finish, or, maybe the paint they used did not stick on the fiberglass, or match well with the painted metal surfaces. Probably just easier to mold and paint them all in one batch, just like the Model T!
No matter, this color scheme does make the car look sleeker. I like how my GT4 is almost stealthy because of it. Only a handful of people ever notice it...

Peter, your answer is the generally accepted nomenclature however the origins of the idea lie elsewhere.
Detomaso used this paint scheme on their factory Group 4 FIA competition cars in 1971 many years before the BBs were introduced.
Before that?
There was the Bordinat Detomaso Mangusta that predated the Group 4 racers…maybe a trial run?
Also, there was a Monteverdi Hai in this paint scheme but it is was all one colour when built and later adopted the black lower trim after 1971.
So, I always answer with “Boxer trim” at FCA events but think “Detomaso trim”.

Doug seems to be AWOL, so I’ll step in for him.
It’s the Boxer paint trim. It was to give it a familial look to the showroom, as all of the two-seater line-up could have that option (which was standard on the 365/512 Boxers, as you well know why).

Awesome! They always looked good with the lower black whatever it’s called trim.
Cue Doug here…
