Great story. But I have to say (you knew there would be a "but"), it pails in comparison to some of what I've seen on Lotus Elan forums....

A guy was driving through Death Valley (in an old Lotus???) and had the very problematic heater valve on the side of the motor fail. He had a very lengthy description of removing the part, whittling wood pegs to plug the various openings, and filling the radiator with basically mud found alongside the road.

I almost bought one until I sobered up.

I have actually used the toolkits many times over the years. It is always when I am driving someone else's car or riding along.

Pliers, 10mm wrench, screwdrivers, bulbs, spark plug wrench, etc.

When I bring my own car, I keep an extensive tool kit with the most popular road side items.

Some of those items can be rather odd. Spare lugnuts, tire plug kit, spare battery terminal (the kind with the two bolts to pinch the heavy gauge wire).

I once had a throttle cable snap in an intersection. After coasting to the side of the road and stopping, I attached the two split ends of the cable to each of the two bolt ends on top of the spare battery terminal.

Not much sensitivity due to the weight of the terminal but it got me home 20 miles...

I used a couple of wrenches from my 308’s toolkit to fix a buddy’s car on a group drive many years ago.

When I changed the plugs in my Mondial, neither sparkplug sockets I had in my toolbox would fit. The toolkit comes with one. Made by USAG... 18mm! It’s a really nice one, as it has a circular magnet in the well to hold the spark plug in – which is much better than the old-fashioned rubber insert, or Snap-On’s wedge design.

They also have spare light bulbs and fuses. I’ve had to replace fuses before and was glad I had them.

Why do Ferraris come with tool kits?

There is absolutely nothing on a modern day Ferrari that the tool kit can fix!

Even the tool kit on the 308 which is as basic car as you can get.

What’s is it with the tool kit?
